Interestingly enough, even though SMO and SEO may seem very similar, they do have some differences. One being that SMO focuses on driving web traffic from sources other than the search engines. There are many rules in SMO, which have defined it very efficiently. Some of them include increasing the ability of the links, making tagging and bookmarking easier, allowing sharing, rewarding helpful users, knowing how to target your audience, etc. These rules have helped a lot in the general understanding of SMO.
